Magnus was an old great and powerful alchemist who happened to unearth a slumbering vampire, and he bound him in chains. Magnus stole the blood from his immortal prisoner and made himself into a vampire. No explanation was given why he did so.

Magnus was an outcast from the satanic Paris Coven, led by Armand. He did not have the stamina to survive in the new world and had gone a little bit crazy. He spent a long time choosing a successor and at Renaud's theatre, found the young actor, Lestat, the star of the show (playing Lelio). He chose Lestat for his youth and the sunlight in his hair and the blue sky fixed forever in his eyes. He also loved Lestat for the fight in him and how he survived his battle with the vicious wolves.

Lestat saw Magnus as a "mask of old age, this grinning thing cut deeply with the marks of time and yet frozen, it seemed as hard as his hands. He wasn't a living thing, he was a monster. A vampire was what he as, a blood-sucking corpse from the grave gifted with intellect!"

At first Magnus terrified Lestat, but once he was transformed, Lestat felt love and dependency for Magnus. Magnus showed Lestat where to sleep in his tower and where his money was. He told Lestat he was his heir and that he was going to leave him.

After giving Lestat a quick lesson on survival, Magnus lit a fire and jumped into it. His instructions for Lestat was to scatter his ashes or else he might still live and he would kill Lestat for not following his orders. Having to fend for himself, with little guidance, Lestat unwillingly inherited from Magnus his Paris tower and his small fortune.

Lestat was not made a vampire from Marius, as 'Queen of the Damned' movie will suggest.
